Oral Surgery Recovery: Smooth and Comfortable Healing Process

Oral surgery at Jersey Smiles, whether it’s a tooth extraction, dental implant placement, or wisdom tooth removal, is a common procedure that helps protect and improve your oral health. While the surgery itself is important, the recovery period is equally vital for proper healing and preventing complications. Following the right aftercare steps can make your recovery smoother, more comfortable, and more successful.

Below are several key recommendations to help you heal properly after oral surgery.

Follow Our Post-Operative Instructions

Your dental team will provide specific aftercare instructions tailored to your procedure. These instructions may include medication guidelines, dietary recommendations, and cleaning instructions. Be sure to follow them closely. If anything is unclear, don’t hesitate to contact our office for clarification.

Manage Bleeding and Swelling

Mild bleeding is normal during the first 24 hours after surgery. Your dentist will typically place gauze over the surgical site to help control bleeding. Bite down gently on the gauze and change it as directed.

Swelling is also common and usually peaks within the first 48 hours. Applying an ice pack to the outside of your cheek in 15 to 20 minute intervals can help minimize swelling and discomfort. Keeping your head elevated while resting may also help reduce swelling.

Take Prescribed Medications as Directed

Your dentist may prescribe pain relievers, anti-inflammatory medications, or antibiotics depending on your procedure. Take these medications exactly as instructed. Staying ahead of discomfort by taking medication before the numbness fully wears off can make recovery more comfortable. If you experience unexpected side effects or severe pain that doesn’t improve, contact your dental provider right away.

Stick to Soft, Nutritious Foods

After oral surgery, it’s best to choose soft, easy-to-chew foods. Good options include yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, soup, scrambled eggs, oatmeal, and applesauce. These foods provide nutrients while minimizing irritation to the surgical site. Avoid hard, crunchy, spicy, or extremely hot foods for several days. Additionally, do not use straws, as suction can disrupt healing and increase the risk of dry socket.

Keep the Area Clean

Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential for preventing infection, but it’s important to be gentle. Avoid brushing directly over the surgical area for the first day unless your dentist advises otherwise. After the initial healing period, you may be instructed to rinse the area gently with warm salt water to keep it clean and promote healing. Continue brushing and flossing the rest of your teeth normally while being careful around the surgical site.

Avoid Smoking and Alcohol

Smoking and alcohol can significantly slow the healing process and increase the risk of complications such as infection or dry socket. It’s best to avoid smoking for at least several days after surgery, longer if possible, to give your body the best chance to heal properly.

Allow Time to Rest

Your body heals best when it has time to recover. Plan to take it easy for the first day or two after surgery. Avoid strenuous physical activity, heavy lifting, or intense exercise until your dentist says it’s safe to resume normal activities.

When to Contact Your Dentist

While mild discomfort and swelling are normal, contact your dental office if you experience excessive bleeding, severe pain, fever, or worsening swelling after several days.

By following these simple recovery tips, you can support proper healing and return to your normal routine as quickly as possible. If you have any questions about oral surgery aftercare, we’re always happy to help guide you through the recovery process.
